Another arbitrary calendar event on the horizon to mark the passage of time, offer a reason to drink, wear stupid hats and fill the air with fake "bombs bursting at night." Typical human concept to set up a rotation of existence to compartmentalize reality, schedule interaction and tell each other when it is time to do this or that.
When did it start? Certainly the seasons, sun angle, moon phases, temperature were important to crop growers but city dwellers compounded and manipulated this tool to benefit commerce ($$$$). Think about it.
